Le président du Tchad, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, avait clairement indiqué sa position face à la menace djihadiste : « Nous intensifierons notre combat avec une fermeté accrue jusqu’à l’élimination complète de cette organisation terroriste », comme en témoigne son message publié sur Facebook le 5 mai. Cette déclaration fait suite à l’attaque meurtrière menée la veille par une faction affiliée à Boko Haram contre la base militaire de Barka Tolorom, située sur les rives tchadiennes du lac Tchad, ayant entraîné la perte de 24 soldats tchadiens.
